Shubman Gill’s Squad Silences Critics with 2-2 Test Series Result

Before the high-profile five-match Test series between England and India began, not many had high hopes for the visitors. With legends like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and R Ashwin retiring from Test cricket ahead of the tour, India’s squad looked inexperienced on paper. The leadership baton was passed to a relatively young Shubman Gill, and questions were raised about how this fresh-faced team would fare against a strong English side led by Ben Stokes.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan even boldly predicted a 3-1 series win for the hosts. But India had other plans.

Despite the odds, India fought back to level the series 2-2 after pulling off a sensational victory in the fifth and final Test at The Oval. Chasing a daunting target of 374, England appeared in control thanks to centuries from Joe Root and Harry Brook, who shared a 195-run partnership for the fourth wicket. With just 73 runs needed and six wickets in hand, England seemed destined for a comfortable win.

Siraj, Prasidh, and Akash Deep Deliver Under Pressure

The momentum shifted dramatically late on Day 4 when Akash Deep broke the crucial partnership by dismissing Brook. Prasidh Krishna followed with key wickets, removing Jacob Bethell and Joe Root in quick succession. Suddenly, India had an opening.

On Day 5, with just 35 runs needed and four wickets in hand, England were still favourites. But Mohammed Siraj turned the game on its head. He produced a fiery spell, dismissing Jamie Smith and Jamie Overton in quick succession. Prasidh Krishna then sent back Josh Tongue, leaving England on the brink. With six runs to win, Gus Atkinson tried to hold on, but Siraj delivered a searing inswinging yorker to knock over his off stump—sealing a famous Indian victory.

This match not only showcased India’s resilience but also marked a significant moment in the team’s transition era. Under Shubman Gill, this new-look Indian side demonstrated character, composure, and fighting spirit throughout the series.

Former India offspinner Harbhajan Singh didn’t hold back in his response to Vaughan’s pre-series comments. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Harbhajan said, “Michael Vaughan and many others predicted it would be 3-1 or 3-0. I would tell them to look towards their side and where England cricket stands. Our warriors have shown the level of Indian cricket.”

He added, “Unbelievable Test match and the way India have played the series, they deserve praise. Many doubted this young team without senior players, but look at the history they’ve created.”

What’s Next for Team India?

Following this thrilling result, India will now turn their focus to the home season. The team is scheduled to host four Test matches in 2025—two against West Indies in October and two against South Africa in November.

This 2-2 result in England not only cements India’s depth in talent but also sends a strong message to the cricketing world: the future of Indian Test cricket is in safe hands.
