After three underwhelming outings in ODI cricket, Yashasvi Jaiswal silenced all critics with a brilliant maiden century in the series decider against South Africa in Vizag on December 6. Chasing 271, the young left-hander put on a stellar performance that helped India secure a commanding nine-wicket victory and clinch the series.
Jaiswal, 24, opened the innings alongside Rohit Sharma and shared a massive 155-run partnership before Rohit’s dismissal. Showing composure and maturity beyond his years, he continued to dominate, eventually finishing unbeaten on 116. His innings also included an unbroken 116-run stand with Virat Kohli, proving his ability to anchor the innings under pressure.
Mentorship from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli
Jaiswal credited his success to the guidance he received from senior teammates. Speaking after the match, he revealed that Virat Kohli helped him stay focused and calm during the chase.
“Virat paaji, the minute he came, he started playing a lot of shots and we kept chatting as well. He kept giving me small targets to focus on, which really helped me towards my goal,” Jaiswal said, reflecting on the impact of Kohli’s advice.
He also shared that his discussions with Rohit Sharma helped him set the tempo for the chase. The pair started cautiously but soon found their rhythm, accumulating runs at a brisk pace. “We have been chatting a lot about how we can play and set the target. I had starts in the last two games but couldn’t convert them. So, we were discussing how to balance the innings and convert starts,” he explained.
Balancing Attack and Caution in ODI Cricket
Although already an established Test opener, Jaiswal is still learning the nuances of 50-over cricket. In only his fourth ODI, the youngster showcased his growing understanding of pacing an innings.
“I was thinking about how to balance the innings. Sometimes I needed to be attacking, and at other times, I focused on singles and managing the game. That was my plan, and it worked well,” Jaiswal said.
He added, “I have to control my thoughts on which shots to play and when. Keeping that in mind allows me to go after the bowlers when required.”
Jaiswal’s performance not only secured India a series win but also announced him as a rising star capable of handling pressure in the ODI format. His maiden century is a clear statement that he is ready to cement his place in the Indian white-ball team.
