Indian cricket legends Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have officially retired from T20 Internationals and Test cricket, but their hunger for international glory isn’t over yet. Both players are now setting their sights on the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.

While their recent form and experience keep them in the mix, former cricketers like Sunil Gavaskar and Irfan Pathan believe that to realistically aim for a World Cup spot in 2027, the duo must return to domestic cricket, especially the Vijay Hazare Trophy, to stay match-fit and sharp.

No Competitive Cricket Since IPL 2025

Since their last international appearance during the Champions Trophy 2025, both Kohli and Rohit have been absent from any form of competitive cricket. Their most recent action came during the IPL 2025, where they showed promising form—Kohli scored 657 runs at an average of 54.75 and a strike rate of 144.71, while Rohit managed 418 runs with a strike rate of 149.28.

Despite their solid IPL outings, game time in the 50-over format has been minimal. Their last few ODI seasons were strong—Rohit Sharma scored 1,714 runs in 37 innings since 2023, averaging 48.97 at a strike rate of 117.2. Virat Kohli was equally impressive, scoring 1,710 runs in 34 innings at an average of 61.07 and a strike rate of 95.8.

Now, as India gears up for a three-match ODI series in Australia starting October 19, both veterans have been included in the squad. However, there’s a twist—Rohit Sharma is no longer the ODI captain, with Shubman Gill taking over the reins. This change signals that Rohit’s spot in the 2027 World Cup squad is anything but guaranteed.

Gavaskar and Pathan Urge Domestic Comeback

Cricket icon Sunil Gavaskar strongly emphasized the importance of domestic cricket for Kohli and Rohit if they wish to remain competitive for the next ODI World Cup. Speaking to India Today, he said,

“They will have to play the Vijay Hazare Trophy in India whenever it’s scheduled, if it doesn’t clash with any international ODI tournaments. That’s one way to stay in trim and maintain match practice.”

Gavaskar also raised concerns about the limited number of ODIs played annually, suggesting that playing just 7–8 one-day matches per year won’t be enough preparation for a tournament as massive as the World Cup.

Irfan Pathan, on his YouTube channel, echoed the same thoughts. He pointed out that while fitness off the field is crucial, “game fitness”—which comes only with consistent match play—is equally vital.

“There is regular fitness, and game time fitness… If you are not playing regular cricket, both of them have to ensure some game time. They have to play domestic cricket.”

Pathan further added that although both Kohli and Rohit have enough experience and know-how to handle the pressure of international cricket, the long gaps between matches due to their limited participation in T20Is and Tests could hinder their sharpness.

As the countdown to the 2027 World Cup begins, all eyes will be on whether the two veterans take the domestic route to keep their dream alive. One thing is clear: talent and experience alone won’t be enough. They’ll need game time, rhythm, and match fitness—and the Vijay Hazare Trophy might be their best ticket to one last shot at World Cup glory.
