England has officially turned back the clock to secure its future, appointing legendary coach Troy Cooley as the men’s elite national pace-bowling lead. Over two decades after he famously helped England reclaim the Ashes in 2005, the 60-year-old Australian returns to the ECB with a massive mandate: overseeing the development of the country’s fast-bowling stocks from the grassroots to the senior squad.

A Proven Architect of Fast Bowling Excellence

Troy Cooley is widely regarded as one of the premier bowling minds in world cricket. His first stint with England culminated in the historic 2005 Ashes victory, where his technical guidance was credited with transforming a talented pace attack into a world-beating unit. Following that success, Cooley returned to his native Australia, spending 15 years within Cricket Australia’s national performance program before a recent high-profile stint at the BCCI’s National Cricket Academy in India.

The ECB’s Managing Director, Rob Key, emphasized that Cooley’s appointment is about more than just immediate results. “Troy is one of the very best coaches in the world,” Key stated. “His vast experience will not only benefit the senior England Men’s team but also help to nurture the next wave of talent. We are looking to build a structure for sustainable success.”

Bridging the Gap: From Young Lions to the Senior Squad

Cooley’s new role is expansive. Since Jon Lewis departed to lead the England Women’s team in 2022, the men’s side has relied on a rotation of consultants, including legends like James Anderson and Tim Southee. By bringing in Cooley, the ECB is moving toward a more permanent, structured approach. He will be responsible for the “development and coaching of fast bowlers” across the entire pathway, including the Lions and Young Lions programs.

Cooley himself is eager to blend the “art of performance with the science of long-term development.” His goal is to create a unified coaching language and technical standard across English cricket, ensuring that when a young bowler makes the jump to the international stage, they do so with absolute clarity and confidence. Having worked under VVS Laxman in India, Cooley brings a fresh, global perspective back to a system he once helped lead to the pinnacle of the sport.
