India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has officially returned to training for the first time since undergoing sports hernia surgery earlier this year. The 34-year-old batter had flown to Germany for the procedure and has since been rehabilitating at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

The development marks a key milestone in his recovery as India prepare for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025, which begins on September 9.

Suryakumar Yadav Begins Training After Surgery

On August 5 (Tuesday), Suryakumar Yadav stepped back into the nets, slowly easing into his batting routines under close supervision. The BCCI plans to gradually ramp up his workload over the coming weeks to ensure a full recovery before the major tournament.

This isn’t his first encounter with a sports hernia. The Mumbai-born cricketer had undergone a similar operation in 2024, and his return this time is being managed with even more caution. With no international fixtures lined up before the Asia Cup, the recovery window is working in his favor.

Postponement of Bangladesh Tour Gives Extra Time

India were initially scheduled to tour Bangladesh in August 2025. However, due to security concerns, that series has been pushed to 2026. The postponement gives Suryakumar — and the team — valuable breathing space ahead of the continental showdown.

Suryakumar had a stellar IPL 2025 season, finishing with 717 runs at an average of 65.18, despite Mumbai Indians only making it to the playoffs. His consistency stood out, as he scored more than 25 runs in every one of the 16 games he played — earning him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

Now with his focus firmly set on returning at full fitness, India’s dynamic T20I skipper is poised to play a crucial role in their Asia Cup campaign.
