Since his comeback to India’s T20I side, Shubman Gill has faced scrutiny over his strike rate, scoring 230 runs at a strike rate of 139.39. While these numbers are respectable on their own, they often get compared to his opening partner, Abhishek Sharma, who has impressed with a more aggressive approach.

In the ongoing five-match T20I series against Australia, Gill’s scores read 37* (20), 5 (10), 15 (12), and 46 (39). Critics have frequently questioned his pace in the format. However, former Indian pacer Varun Aaron has defended Gill, emphasizing his value in a team dominated by big hitters.

Why Shubman Gill is Crucial for India in T20Is

Aaron highlighted that Gill’s technique, composure, and game awareness make him an indispensable part of the T20 setup. “When conditions don’t favor batting, you can always put your money on Shubman Gill. He knows what the wicket offers and plays according to the situation. You need someone like him in T20 cricket,” Aaron said on Star Sports.

Gill’s spot in the team has often come under scrutiny, especially since the management ended the successful Sanju Samson-Abhishek Sharma opening partnership to accommodate him. The duo had dominated the top order for India in previous matches, making Gill’s inclusion a debated topic among fans and experts alike.

Despite this, Aaron maintained that even Gill’s 39-ball 46 in the series was “worth its weight in gold,” as India took a 2-1 lead. “When people question Gill’s place in T20s, it never makes sense. He steps up when others fail, especially on tricky wickets. His innings often gives the team stability and momentum,” he added.

India now aims to continue their impressive T20I streak, needing just one more win to secure ten consecutive unbeaten T20I series. Gill’s role could be pivotal in achieving this milestone, proving that technique and temperament often outweigh sheer power in the shortest format.
