As India gears up for the first ODI against Australia on Sunday, October 19, in Perth, all eyes will be on Shubman Gill, who is set to lead the team in a match that marks a significant moment in Indian cricket. The 26-year-old will not only be captaining the side for the first time in an ODI but will also have two of the game’s modern-day legends, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, playing under his leadership.
This transition signals a vital shift as the team begins planning for the 2027 ODI World Cup. While the outside world may be buzzing with speculation on how Gill will handle the responsibility, especially with two senior pros in the squad, the man himself remains calm and focused.
Shubman Gill on Captaincy: “Nothing Has Changed Internally”
Speaking ahead of the ODI series opener, Gill addressed the chatter about his new role and how it feels to lead a side that still includes senior figures like Kohli and Rohit.
“I think the narrative outside is different, but among us, nothing has changed. Everything is the same as it was before, and that is very helpful,” Gill said confidently.
He added that his approach to captaincy involves seeking inputs from the seasoned campaigners around him.
“Whatever they feel, their experience—whether by reading the pitch or a situation—I go to them and ask what they think, how they would handle it if they were in my place. I like knowing their thoughts and then, based on my understanding, I make my decisions.”
Gill made it clear that he’s comfortable turning to the experienced duo for guidance when needed.
“I have a very good relationship with both Virat Bhai and Rohit Bhai. Whenever I have a doubt, I go to them, take their suggestions, and they never hesitate to help. That’s the real wealth of experience,” he explained.
“A Huge Honour to Lead Legends I Grew Up Watching”
For Gill, the opportunity to captain players he once idolised is more than just a responsibility—it’s a dream come true.
“I mean, obviously, these are the kind of players I used to idolise when I was growing up,” said Gill. “The hunger they had inspired me. It is a big honour to lead such legends of the game.”
He views the upcoming series not only as a test of his leadership but also as a learning experience.
“There will be many moments in this series where I can learn from them. If I get into a difficult position, I won’t hesitate to take their advice.”
Gill also acknowledged the expectations that come with the role, especially following in the footsteps of icons like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma.
“Definitely, very exciting. Big shoes for me to fill—to carry forward the legacy. I’ve had numerous conversations with both Rohit and Virat on how to take the team forward and build the kind of culture we want. Those learnings will help us in the journey ahead.”
Gill’s ODI Form: A Leader in Bat and Spirit
Shubman Gill isn’t just leading with words—his performances back his leadership. Since 2023, he is one of only three players to score over 2,000 runs in the ODI format, underlining his consistency and importance to the team.
As India takes the first step into a new era of one-day cricket, all signs point to Shubman Gill as a leader who respects the past, understands the present, and is ready to shape the future.
