Indian cricket has entered a new era as Shubman Gill takes over the reins of the One-Day International (ODI) team, replacing veteran skipper Rohit Sharma. The move, though significant, comes with the full backing of former India captain and ex-BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, who believes the timing is just right with the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon.

Sourav Ganguly: “Not a Bad Decision to Promote Gill”

In a conversation with India TV, Ganguly shared his thoughts on the leadership transition, stating, “I am sure Rohit must have been spoken to. I am sure it’s a mutual discussion. Rohit has been an outstanding leader. He has won the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy.”

Ganguly acknowledged that every athlete eventually reaches the end of their journey. “Even Shubman Gill will face the same at 40. Everyone in sport has to finish someday. Not a bad decision to promote Gill. He’s shown a lot of talent in England. I think it’s a fair call,” he said.

According to Ganguly, handing the captaincy to a young and talented player like Gill ensures a smoother transition and gives the team ample time to build under a new leader. “Rohit can keep playing while you groom a young captain,” he added.

Gill’s England Stint Signals Leadership Potential

Shubman Gill’s recent performances, particularly during India’s tour of England where he led the team to a 2-2 series draw, have convinced many of his leadership capabilities. Ganguly pointed out that Gill’s leadership in challenging English conditions is a good indicator of what’s to come.

“I congratulate him. He has done well in England; he will do well in the future as well,” Ganguly stated. “The Indian team is very good. All the players perform well and that is why they have been given the chance.”

A New Chapter Begins Against Australia

Gill’s first assignment as full-time ODI captain will be the upcoming three-match series against Australia, starting October 19. The series will be closely watched as fans and critics assess how India’s next generation of leaders handle the pressure on the international stage.

With backing from legends like Ganguly and the support of a strong team, Gill’s promotion marks a bold but calculated step in India’s roadmap to the 2027 World Cup.
