Shreyas Iyer is set to make a return to the Indian Premier League, but this time in a different role. The Punjab Kings all-rounder will be part of the franchise’s auction table for the IPL 2026 event in Abu Dhabi, according to a report by Cricbuzz. The Mumbaikar is expected to lead PBKS’ delegation, which will include seven additional members. This marks Iyer’s first public appearance since suffering a spleen injury during the third ODI against Australia earlier this year.
Ricky Ponting to Miss the IPL 2026 Auction
Punjab Kings will be without their head coach, Ricky Ponting, at the upcoming auction. Currently working with the Seven Network as a commentator for the ongoing Australia vs England Test series, Ponting will be unable to attend due to broadcast commitments. Cricbuzz also suggested that the team’s largely settled squad may be another reason for his absence from the event.
Other Coaches Set to Attend
While Ponting will miss out, Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Daniel Vettori will be present at the auction table. Australian coaches Justin Langer and Tom Moody are also expected to participate in the high-profile event.
Last season, Iyer captained Punjab Kings to their first IPL final in ten years, although the team fell short in a dramatic finale against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. His presence at the auction table is expected to bring valuable insight as PBKS prepares for another competitive season.
