Despite India’s stellar victory in Sydney, the cricketing world was left concerned as vice-captain Shreyas Iyer suffered a severe injury while pulling off a remarkable diving catch. The Mumbaikar was immediately admitted to the ICU (Intensive Care Unit) after his vitals dropped significantly following the impact.
Details of Shreyas Iyer’s Injury
According to the BCCI, Iyer has sustained a laceration injury to the spleen. A statement revealed:
“Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress.”
This serious injury meant that Iyer could not be part of India’s squad for the ongoing five-match T20I series against Australia, and there is currently no update on his return to professional cricket.
Positive Signs From Recovery
In a recent update, India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav confirmed that Iyer is now stable and responding to messages. Yadav shared:
“We have been talking to him for two days now. He has been replying. If he is replying on the phone, it means he is stable. And the doctor is also there with him. He will be under supervision for the next few days. So it’s looking good.”
He added that communication on the first day after the injury was difficult, as Iyer did not have his phone, but confirmation from the medical team reassured them of his condition.
Fans and teammates alike continue to send their wishes as Shreyas Iyer focuses on recovery under close medical supervision, with hopes for a safe and healthy return to the cricket field in the near future.
