Indian cricket vice-captain Shreyas Iyer remains doubtful for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, even after recovering from the serious injury that saw him hospitalised during the Australia tour.

Reports suggest that Iyer, who suffered a spleen laceration while attempting a catch in the third ODI in Sydney, is still not completely match-fit. The incident, which caused internal bleeding, required an emergency medical procedure in Australia before he returned home.

Shreyas Iyer’s Recovery Update

According to a report published by The Indian Express on November 11 (Tuesday), the Indian team’s selection committee has been informed about Iyer’s current fitness status. Medical reports indicate that the 29-year-old batter needs at least another month to regain full match fitness and return to competitive cricket.

“Iyer, who recently came back from Australia, is still recovering from the injury and needs more time before he can play international cricket,” the report stated. This means his participation in the South Africa ODIs is highly unlikely.

Iyer’s Message to Fans and Expected Return

A day before the report, on November 10 (Monday), Shreyas Iyer took to social media to update fans on his recovery. He posted an Instagram story saying, “Sun’s been great therapy. Grateful to be back. Thanks for all the love and care.”

While his post raised hopes of an early return, the latest update suggests that Iyer’s comeback to international cricket will be delayed. If recovery goes as planned, he is expected to return to action by January 11, when India hosts New Zealand for a three-match ODI series.
