India’s young batting sensation Shafali Verma might just make her much-awaited return to the One Day International setup, as she gears up to feature in the Women’s ODI World Cup semi-final clash against Australia on October 30 (Thursday).

Originally, Verma wasn’t part of India’s World Cup plans, but destiny had other ideas. She earned a call-up after Pratika Rawal’s injury and is now expected to take her place in the playing XI—unless the management decides otherwise.

Before joining the national team, the Haryana-born batter was in scintillating form at the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy, where she amassed 341 runs in seven matches at a blazing strike rate of 182.35. Her tally included 17 sixes, the joint-most in the tournament alongside Kiran Navgire, underlining her reputation as one of the most destructive hitters in women’s cricket.

Shafali Verma on Handling Pressure Ahead of the Semi-Final

When asked about the pressure of playing a World Cup semi-final, Shafali appeared calm and confident.

“I was playing domestic cricket and was in good touch,” Verma told Cricbuzz. “It’s not something new for me because I’ve played many semi-finals before. I just need to keep my mind clear and believe in myself. I’ll stay calm and give my best—200%.”

The 21-year-old batter emphasized that experience and self-belief will be key to performing under pressure.

Adapting from T20s to ODIs and Team Spirit

Transitioning from T20 cricket to the 50-over format is never easy, and Shafali admitted as much.

“Absolutely, I was playing T20s, and as a batter, it’s not easy to switch formats so quickly. But we had good practice sessions, and I stayed calm and batted well. I tried to attack the bowlers in my range, and it’s been working out. So yes, I’m happy with my touch.”

Having batted at the top of the order throughout her career, Verma is also open to taking on any role that benefits the team.

“That’s a management call,” she said. “But I’m flexible. I can play anywhere—opener or middle order. The confidence I have in myself is very important. Wherever the management wants me, I’m super ready.”

With her fearless mindset, explosive batting, and renewed confidence, Shafali Verma could be India’s X-factor in the high-stakes semi-final against Australia. If her domestic form is any indication, fans might be in for a special performance on Thursday.
