Gaikwad Shines with Unbeaten 121 Against Central Zone in Duleep Trophy Semi-Final

Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad proved once again why he’s considered one of the most dependable batters in Indian domestic cricket. On Thursday, September 4, in a crucial Duleep Trophy 2025 semi-final clash between West Zone and Central Zone, Gaikwad produced a match-saving innings under pressure.

West Zone were off to a disastrous start after winning the toss and choosing to bat first. Khaleel Ahmed struck early, trapping Yashasvi Jaiswal lbw for just 4 runs. The troubles compounded as Harvik Desai also departed cheaply, falling to Deepak Chahar, leaving the scoreboard at a precarious 10/2.

With the top order collapsing, Gaikwad walked in under pressure — and delivered. He stitched together a crucial 82-run partnership with Aarya Desai, who made a composed 39. Their stand helped West Zone stabilize after the early jolts. However, once Aarya was dismissed, the responsibility increased on Gaikwad and Shreyas Iyer to build further.

Unfortunately for West Zone, Iyer couldn’t settle in and fell to Khaleel Ahmed again, placing even more onus on Gaikwad to anchor the innings. Rising to the occasion, the CSK skipper displayed a wide range of strokes and remarkable composure, particularly against spin duo Saransh Jain and Harsh Dubey.

Coming off a rather average Buchi Babu Trophy 2025, this innings was a strong comeback for Gaikwad. He remained unbeaten on 121 off 157 balls*, hitting 16 boundaries and maintaining a healthy strike rate of 77.07. His knock not only steadied the innings but also gave West Zone a fighting total on a challenging pitch.

Gaikwad’s performance reaffirms his readiness for bigger stages and sends a strong message ahead of the upcoming domestic and IPL seasons. With his ability to handle pressure, adapt to conditions, and counter quality bowling attacks, he continues to be a pillar for any side he represents.
