Indian cricket legend Rohit Sharma has etched his name into the history books yet again. On October 19 (Sunday), the former India captain became just the 11th cricketer in history and only the fifth Indian to play 500 international matches. The milestone came as Rohit was named in the playing XI for the first ODI against Australia in Perth.

Rohit Sharma: Among Cricket’s Elite 500-Match Club

With this achievement, Rohit joins an elite group of Indian legends:

  • Sachin Tendulkar (664 matches)
  • Virat Kohli (550)
  • MS Dhoni (538)
  • Rahul Dravid (509)

Globally, other members of the 500-match club include:

  • Mahela Jayawardene (652)
  • Kumar Sangakkara (594)
  • Sanath Jayasuriya (586)
  • Ricky Ponting (560)
  • Shahid Afridi (524)
  • Jacques Kallis (519)

At 38 years and 171 days, Rohit is also the second-oldest player to reach this landmark, behind Rahul Dravid, who got there at 38 years and 241 days.

A Look at Rohit Sharma’s Career Stats

Since making his international debut in June 2007, Rohit Sharma has built a stellar career across formats. The Mumbai-born opener has represented India in:

  • 67 Tests
  • 274 ODIs
  • 159 T20Is

He has amassed an impressive 19,700 international runs, which include 49 centuries and 108 fifties.

Though he has retired from Test cricket, Rohit continues to play ODIs — his only active format now. His last competitive outing came in the IPL 2025, and he last donned India colors during the Champions Trophy earlier this year.

What’s Next for Rohit?

While Rohit’s spot in the 2027 ODI World Cup squad remains uncertain — he’ll be 40 by then and has already handed over ODI captaincy duties to Shubman Gill — his current form still makes a strong case.

Since the beginning of 2023, Rohit has scored 1,714 runs in 37 ODI innings at a solid average of 48.97 and a blazing strike rate of 117.2. His ability to dominate in the powerplay and anchor innings remains as strong as ever.

Whether or not he makes it to the next World Cup, Rohit Sharma’s legacy is firmly cemented. With 500 matches under his belt and counting, he remains one of the most iconic batters of his generation.
