In a major leadership change for New Zealand cricket, Rob Walter has been appointed as the new head coach of the Black Caps across all three formats. This comes after Gary Stead stepped down following a successful seven-year stint at the helm.

Walter, who most recently served as South Africa’s white-ball coach, has signed a three-year contract with New Zealand Cricket and will officially begin his new role in mid-June. His first assignment will be leading the team on their tour of Zimbabwe in July.

A Proven Track Record with South Africa

Rob Walter’s coaching credentials are impressive. During his time with South Africa, he guided the national team to the semi-finals of the 2023 ICC ODI World Cup and the 2025 Champions Trophy. He also coached them to the final of the 2024 ICC T20 World Cup, underlining his expertise in managing high-pressure tournaments and delivering results on the world stage.

Walter’s previous connection with New Zealand cricket includes coaching stints with domestic sides Otago Volts and Central Stags. His family has since settled in Hawke’s Bay, which played a key role in his decision to leave the South African setup and return to New Zealand.

Excitement and Vision for the Future

Speaking after the announcement, Walter expressed his enthusiasm about rejoining New Zealand cricket at the international level.

“The Black Caps have been a successful and highly-regarded team on the world scene for some time now, and it’s a real privilege to be given the chance to add to that,” said Walter.

He added, “It’s an amazing opportunity to work with such a talented group of players and support staff through a period of time in which so many global events, as well as massive bilateral series, will be contested. I just can’t wait to get started. It’s exciting, it’s challenging, and the opportunity is enormous for everyone.”

Walter’s appointment marks a new chapter for New Zealand cricket as they prepare for a busy schedule that includes major ICC tournaments and competitive international tours. With his global experience and deep ties to New Zealand’s domestic cricket, fans and players alike are hopeful that Walter can build on the team’s strong legacy and push the Black Caps to even greater heights.
