Ashwin Says Kuldeep Must Play If India Wants to Take 20 Wickets
Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has strongly backed Kuldeep Yadav’s inclusion in the playing XI for the second Test against England at Edgbaston, starting July 2. After India’s bowling unit failed to pick 20 wickets in the first Test—allowing England to chase down a record target with five wickets in hand—Ashwin believes a change in the bowling combination is crucial.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin raised questions about the team management’s commitment to winning Test matches. “There is a serious question of Gambhir and Gill’s commitment to take 20 wickets. This Test will show us. If you are seriously committed, Kuldeep gets a look-in,” Ashwin said, as quoted by The Indian Express.
He emphasized that Kuldeep Yadav could be a game-changer, especially if the pitch at Edgbaston does not have much grass. “Kuldeep Yadav has to play. Drop anyone you want, but Kuldeep has to play. If he does, the England tail also won’t score many runs. He can help win 2-3 Tests in this series by creating serious problems.”
Ashwin Favors Prasidh Krishna, Weighs Options if Bumrah Misses Out
Ashwin also weighed in on the pace bowling options. While he is not in favor of too many changes, he supported retaining Prasidh Krishna after his improved performance in the second innings of the first Test.
“I would retain Prasidh Krishna. He showed in the second innings that when he bowls well, he can make an impact,” Ashwin noted.
With Jasprit Bumrah’s availability still uncertain, Ashwin suggested that India could consider either Akash Deep or Arshdeep Singh as replacements. “I would also think about the left-arm angle of Arshdeep Singh, but since he’s still not a proven commodity in Tests, let’s not forget what Akash Deep can do. I’m okay with either of them if Bumrah doesn’t play.”
India faces England in the second Test at Edgbaston, Birmingham, starting July 2. The team selection will be crucial, especially after a disappointing bowling effort in the series opener.
