Phil Salt, who played a key role in Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s (RCB) historic Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 title win, has opted out of England’s upcoming T20I series against the West Indies to spend time with his newborn child. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed his paternity leave in an official statement, noting that Salt will remain at home following the birth earlier this week.

From IPL Final Heroics to Paternity Break

Salt had flown back from England just a day after the birth of his first child to join the RCB squad for the IPL playoffs and final. His return proved timely as RCB went on to clinch their maiden IPL title after an 18-year wait. Despite limited sleep, Salt delivered a solid performance in the final, scoring a quick 16 off 9 deliveries and taking a stunning catch to dismiss Priyansh Arya.

Post-match, the 27-year-old English batter was full of emotion. When asked if his newborn was his lucky charm, Salt beamed, “I’ve got a lucky charm now. I’m over the moon.” He added, “It’s an unbelievable feeling right now. I’ll be honest with you, I don’t quite know where I am at the minute. I’ve not had the most sleep, but I’m so proud of the boys.”

His IPL opening partner and cricket icon Virat Kohli also chimed in with a playful comment on Salt’s Instagram post: “Now go back to the real stuff and get ready for changing diapers.”

Jamie Smith to Replace Salt in T20I Squad

With Salt unavailable for the West Indies series beginning June 6, Jamie Smith—who had earlier replaced Salt in England’s ODI squad, allowing him to focus on the IPL—will now take his spot in the T20I squad as well. The three-match series forms part of England’s final preparations ahead of major tournaments, but the ECB has extended full support for Salt’s decision to prioritize his family.

The debate over “club over country” has once again resurfaced, with Salt’s situation highlighting the growing complexity professional cricketers face in balancing franchise and international duties. However, his commitment to both RCB and his family shows the evolving dynamics of modern cricket careers, where personal milestones are now increasingly given their due importance.

As the cricketing world continues to evolve, so too does the understanding and acceptance of players taking time off for personal reasons, and Salt’s move is being seen by many as a responsible and commendable decision.
