In a dramatic turn of events, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially withdrawn its national team from the ongoing Asia Cup 2025, citing concerns over the conduct of match referee Andy Pycroft. The development comes after tensions escalated following Pakistan’s group-stage match against India on September 14 in Dubai.

PCB Unhappy Over Match Referee’s Conduct During India Clash

According to reports, the PCB demanded that Pycroft be removed from officiating any further matches in the tournament. Their frustration stemmed from an alleged incident during the toss, where Pycroft reportedly advised Indian and Pakistani captains not to shake hands—a gesture the PCB viewed as disrespectful and against the spirit of cricket.

Following the match, which ended in India’s favor, the Indian team also refrained from shaking hands with the Pakistani players. This added to the PCB’s grievances, leading them to escalate the matter with the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The situation is further inflamed by the broader political context. The match took place amid heightened tensions between the two nations, particularly following Pakistan’s alleged involvement in the Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed several innocent lives. Many in India had initially called for a boycott of the game, but the match proceeded after getting clearance from the Indian government.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi: “Our Honour Is Non-Negotiable”

In a statement, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi declared that continuing in the tournament would be “detrimental to the honour and prestige of our nation.” He also confirmed that the players have been instructed to remain in their hotel rooms ahead of what was supposed to be a must-win match against the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Pakistan had started their campaign with a strong 93-run victory over Oman, but a loss to India left their qualification hopes hanging in the balance.

With Pakistan’s sudden exit, UAE have now advanced to the Super Fours stage of the Asia Cup for the first time in history—a massive achievement for the Associate nation.
