The reigning T20 World Cup champions, New Zealand Women, have made a bold statement ahead of the ODI World Cup 2025, set to be held in India. Looking to lift their second ODI title, the White Ferns have added four uncapped players to their World Cup squad, blending fresh talent with their experienced core.
Four Players Receive Maiden ODI World Cup Call-Ups
Making their debut appearances in a World Cup setup are Flora Devonshire, Polly Inglis, Bella James, and Bree Illing. These young players bring a mix of versatility, skill, and promise to the squad.
All-rounder Flora Devonshire is known for her aggressive batting and ability to finish games down the order. Left-arm seamer Bree Illing brings a swing bowling threat with the new ball, a quality that could be crucial in subcontinental conditions. Bella James, a 360-degree batter, offers flexibility in the batting order, while Polly Inglis adds depth to the wicketkeeping options with her grit and determination.
Their inclusion means that Fran Jonas, a key spinner during the victorious T20 World Cup campaign in Dubai in 2024, misses out. However, most of the core squad that played the final against South Africa remains unchanged.
Coach Ben Sawyer Backs Balanced and Well-Prepared Squad
Head coach Ben Sawyer expressed strong confidence in the squad’s preparation for the tournament.
“I can honestly say that in the four world events I’ve been part of with this group, we are the best prepared we’ve ever been,” Sawyer stated. “Having no international cricket since April has allowed us to focus on physical and skill development, which could be a real advantage in Indian conditions.”
Commenting on the new additions, Sawyer highlighted the tactical importance of swing bowlers and dynamic batters.
“Bree puts batters under pressure early with her swing, and both she and Flora can bring the stumps into play regularly, which will be crucial in India. Bella’s versatility is a real asset, and Polly gives us a dependable backup with the gloves.”
The White Ferns kick off their ODI World Cup 2025 campaign with a blockbuster clash against rivals Australia on October 1 in Indore.
