In a thrilling encounter in Dundee on June 12, 2025, the Netherlands scripted one of the most remarkable run-chases in ODI history. Chasing a mammoth target of 370 against Scotland in the final match of the ICC Cricket World Cup League Two 2023–27, the Dutch team pulled off a sensational win with just four balls to spare. Their score of 374/6 is now the third-highest successful run-chase in One Day Internationals.
Top Three Highest Successful ODI Chases
- South Africa – 438/9 vs Australia, Johannesburg, 2006 (Target: 435)
- South Africa – 372/6 vs Australia, Durban, 2016 (Target: 372)
- Netherlands – 374/6 vs Scotland, Dundee, 2025 (Target: 370)
Scotland had earlier posted a daunting total of 369/6 in their 50 overs, thanks to a record-breaking knock by opener George Munsey, who smashed 191 off 150 balls – the highest individual ODI score by an associate nation batter. He was ably supported by Matthew Cross, who contributed 59 off 49 balls. For the Netherlands, Michael Levitt was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/42, also being the only one with an economy under 7.
Max O’Dowd Leads Netherlands to a Record-Breaking Win
The chase began on a strong note with Max O’Dowd and Michael Levitt adding 67 runs in the first 9.2 overs. Although the Dutch lost wickets at regular intervals and were reduced to 168/4 in the 26th over, O’Dowd held firm.
He found solid support from Teja Nidamanuru, who struck 51 off 42 balls in a 111-run fifth-wicket partnership. After Nidamanuru’s dismissal, Noah Croes entered the fray and hammered a quickfire 50 off just 29 balls, easing the pressure in the final stages.
O’Dowd remained unbeaten on 158 off 130 balls, not only anchoring the chase but also setting a new record for the highest individual score by a Netherlands batter in ODIs.
Top Individual Scores for Netherlands in ODIs:
- 158 – Max O’Dowd vs Scotland*, Dundee, 2025
- 137 – Wesley Barresi vs Kenya*, Lincoln, 2014
- 134 – Klaas-Jan van Noortwijk vs Namibia*, Bloemfontein, 2003
- 123 – Bas de Leede vs Scotland, Bulawayo, 2023
This isn’t the first time the Netherlands have come close to such a feat. In 2023, they tied with the West Indies chasing 375 and won the match in a Super Over. However, since that match ended in a tie during regular play, it doesn’t count as an official successful chase.
With this stunning performance, the Netherlands have cemented their place in ODI history and shown once again that associate nations are more than capable of competing at the highest level.
