Defending champions Mumbai made a stunning comeback in their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy Super League campaign after a disappointing loss to Hyderabad. Chasing a daunting 235 against Haryana, Mumbai secured a thrilling victory with four wickets and 15 balls to spare.
Jaiswal and Sarfaraz Khan Lead Mumbai to Victory
Mumbai’s chase was anchored by the explosive Yashasvi Jaiswal, who led the charge with a brilliant 48-ball century – his fourth in T20 cricket. Jaiswal’s fiery knock included 16 boundaries and a six, and though he holed out just seven runs short of victory, his contribution was instrumental. Atharva Ankolekar wrapped up the game with a six and a four, taking Mumbai over the line in the company of allrounder Sairaj Patil.
Jaiswal’s performance was supported by an 88-run partnership with Sarfaraz Khan, who made an impressive 64 off just 25 balls, which included nine fours and three sixes. The partnership, which came off just 37 balls, took Mumbai closer to victory despite an early setback when Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed for 21 off 10 balls.
Jaiswal, who was named Player of the Match, acknowledged Sarfaraz’s pivotal role in the win, sharing the award with him after the match.
Patil’s Tight Bowling Helps Mumbai Contain Haryana’s Batting
Earlier in the match, Mumbai chose to bowl after winning the toss. Sairaj Patil was the lone wicket-taker for Mumbai, finishing with figures of 2 for 44. Shardul Thakur also kept things tight, maintaining pressure on the Haryana batsmen. One notable moment came in the 19th over when Haryana’s Samant Jakhar was retired out on 31 off 14 balls after struggling to score against Mumbai’s disciplined bowling.
Despite Haryana’s captain, Ankit Kumar, playing a brilliant knock of 89 off 42 balls – his joint-highest T20 score – Mumbai managed to restrict Haryana’s total.
Andhra Stuns Punjab with Record Chase in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy
In another thrilling encounter, Andhra defeated Punjab in a remarkable chase at the MCA Stadium in Pune. Set to chase 206, Andhra were in dire straits at 56 for 5 in the ninth over. However, M Hemanth Reddy, in just his second T20 match, smashed a blistering 109 off 53 balls, including his first-ever T20 century.
Reddy’s partnership with SDNV Prasad, who contributed an unbeaten 53 off 35 balls, led Andhra to a record 155-run partnership for the sixth wicket. This partnership became the second-highest in men’s T20 cricket for the sixth wicket or lower, behind only Andre Russell and Kennar Lewis’s stand for Jamaica Tallawahs in CPL 2018.
Earlier, Punjab posted a competitive 205 for 5, thanks to solid contributions from Harnoor Singh Pannu (42), Anmolpreet Singh (47), Salil Arora (42*), and Ramandeep Singh (43). However, despite the efforts of their top order, Punjab’s bowlers couldn’t contain Reddy and Prasad as Andhra achieved the highest chase in the Super League.
Hyderabad Continue Their Dominance in Group B
Hyderabad, led by the explosive Tanmay Agarwal, continued their undefeated run in Group B of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Agarwal’s 73 off 41 balls, which included eight fours and four sixes, anchored Hyderabad’s chase of 179 against Rajasthan. Agarwal’s dismissal in the 17th over left the game finely poised, but Hyderabad managed to cross the line with six wickets and 17 balls to spare.
Rajasthan, who were reduced to 17 for 2 and 85 for 5, had struggled to build momentum, but Mahipal Lomror’s knock of 48 at No. 4 was the highest score in a difficult innings. Rajasthan’s bowlers, including Manav Suthar (2-20) and Kamlesh Nagarkoti (2-35), fought hard but could not stop Hyderabad’s chase.
With two wins from two matches, Hyderabad now sit at the top of the Super League standings in Group B, maintaining their unbeaten record.
