Mahendra Singh Dhoni, one of India’s most beloved cricketers, is taking steps to secure the rights to his iconic nickname—Captain Cool. On June 30, ESPNcricinfo reported that the Trademark Registry of India has accepted Dhoni’s application to trademark the phrase, marking a major step toward formalizing the moniker that has become synonymous with his calm leadership on the cricket field.
No Objections? Trademark to Be Officially Granted in 120 Days
According to the report by Shashank Kishore, the trademark application was accepted on June 16, 2025, and will be formally granted if no third-party objections or oppositions are filed within a 120-day window. The trademark covers areas such as sports training, coaching, and the provision of sports-related services and facilities.
Dhoni’s move to trademark the name wasn’t without hurdles. After filing, he was notified that Prabha Skill Sports (OPC) Private Limited had already applied for the same trademark. In response, Dhoni filed a rectification petition to challenge the prior claim.
He argued that the company’s filing was made in bad faith, aimed at misleading the public and unfairly profiting off his widely recognized nickname. “This is a case of bad faith registration on the part of the company, aimed at deceiving the public and unlawfully enriching themselves by trading on the name of a well-known individual,” Dhoni stated.
Dhoni Continues to Make Headlines in 2025
Dhoni’s trademark push comes on the heels of a historic month. Earlier in June, he was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame, celebrating his remarkable career and contributions to the sport. He also made headlines during his recent appearance in the IPL 2025, where fans once again saw glimpses of the Captain Cool persona in action.
With the trademark now in motion, fans and stakeholders await the final verdict. If no objections surface by mid-October 2025, the phrase “Captain Cool” will officially belong to the legend himself—cementing not just a nickname, but a brand built on years of leadership, calm under pressure, and love from millions.
