New Zealand have announced that all-rounder Michael Bracewell will replace Glenn Phillips in the squad for the upcoming first Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. Phillips, who was named in the initial squad, has been ruled out due to a groin injury sustained during his stint in Major League Cricket (MLC). The same injury also sidelined him from the ongoing T20I tri-series.
Bracewell, who is already part of the T20I squad in Zimbabwe, has now been added to the Test squad and could make his first Test appearance since 2023.
Bracewell Brings Experience and Balance
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter explained the decision, stating that Bracewell was the closest like-for-like replacement for Phillips.
“Glenn’s injury provided a gap in the Test squad and Michael is the closest like-for-like replacement,” Walter told Cricbuzz.
“Michael’s experience and skillset will be a great asset and allows us to keep the same balance of the team. Given he’s here with the T20 squad and his availability aligned for the first Test, we’re using the opportunity to include him in the squad.”
Decision Pending on Second Test Squad
The two-match Test series against Zimbabwe is set to be played entirely in Bulawayo, with the first Test starting on July 30. While this series is not part of the 2025–27 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, it still holds significance for both teams in terms of preparation and squad development.
Walter also mentioned that a decision on whether Bracewell will remain in the squad for the second Test will be made after the conclusion of the first match.
Bracewell’s inclusion provides a boost in experience and flexibility, especially in subcontinental conditions where his all-round abilities could play a key role.
