Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the new captain of the national One-Day International (ODI) team. This leadership transition sees Mehidy taking over the reins from Najmul Hossain Shanto, who will continue to lead the Test side.
Mehidy’s first assignment as the full-time ODI captain will be the three-match series against Sri Lanka scheduled for next month. Although he has previously led Bangladesh in four ODIs in 2023—none of which resulted in a win—the board remains confident in his abilities to lead the team forward.
A New Era of Leadership in Bangladesh Cricket
This move marks a significant reshuffle in Bangladesh cricket’s leadership structure, with three different players now captaining the national side across formats. While Shanto retains the Test captaincy, Litton Das has been given charge of the T20I squad. The BCB sees this division of leadership as a strategic step during a transitional phase.
Speaking on the appointment, Mehidy expressed his gratitude and ambition:
“It is a huge honour for me to be entrusted with this responsibility by the board. Leading the country is a dream for any cricketer and I am grateful for the confidence the board has shown in me.”
He further added that he believes in the squad’s potential to play “fearless cricket” and wants his team to perform confidently and without inhibition.
Why Mehidy Was Chosen as Captain
Explaining the decision, BCB’s cricket operations chairman Nazmul Abedeen said:
“The board felt that Miraz’s consistent performances with the bat and ball, his ability to fight and inspire the team, and his energetic presence on and off the field make him an ideal candidate to lead the ODI side during a transitional time.”
Abedeen emphasized that Mehidy has shown both the maturity and temperament necessary to guide the team through this critical phase and help shape its future.
As Bangladesh cricket moves into a new chapter with refreshed leadership across all formats, fans and analysts alike will be keenly watching how Mehidy’s tenure shapes the team’s ODI journey.
