Football fans in India are in for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. According to reports, football legend Lionel Messi might take part in a seven-a-side cricket match at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on December 14, alongside Indian cricket icons like Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni.
Messi in Mumbai: A Unique Crossover Event
A senior Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) official revealed that Messi is expected to be present at Wankhede and could even play in the exhibition cricket match. “Messi will be at Wankhede Stadium on December 14. He is likely to play a cricket match, too, with former and current cricketers. The organisers will come up with a complete schedule once everything is finalised,” the official told The Indian Express.
While the full details are yet to be confirmed, the event could also include appearances from other cricket legends such as Sachin Tendulkar and Rohit Sharma, adding to the star-studded spectacle.
Messi’s India Visit: What We Know So Far
Messi is scheduled to be in India from December 13 to 15. Earlier this year, there were discussions about Messi participating in a friendly football match in Kerala with the Argentina national team, and even the Kerala State Government had been involved. However, that plan has reportedly been put on hold for now.
If the Mumbai cricket match goes ahead as expected, it will mark Lionel Messi’s second visit to India. His first was in 2011, when he played an international football friendly for Argentina against Venezuela at the iconic Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata.
This potential cricket match offers a rare opportunity for fans to witness a global football superstar take the field with India’s biggest cricketing legends — not on the pitch he’s known for, but on a cricket field in the heart of Mumbai.
