Lasith Malinga has once again been retained as consultant bowling coach for Sri Lanka’s men’s cricket team as preparations intensify for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which Sri Lanka will co-host from early February. The appointment highlights Sri Lanka Cricket’s focus on strengthening its bowling attack, especially in the shortest format of the game.

Malinga’s current role is a 40-day stint, running from December 15 to January 25. While short in duration, the appointment is effectively a continuation of his long-standing involvement with Sri Lanka’s top bowlers. Over the years, Malinga has officially served as a fast-bowling consultant on multiple occasions and has also worked informally with leading national bowlers, offering technical guidance and tactical insight.

Malinga’s Experience a Key Asset for Sri Lanka

In addition to his previous consultant roles, Malinga has been advising the national coaching staff led by Sanath Jayasuriya for the past two years. His vast international experience, particularly in mastering death bowling, makes him a valuable resource as Sri Lanka prepare for a high-pressure global tournament.

With round-arm pacers Matheesha Pathirana and Nuwan Thushara included in Sri Lanka’s preliminary T20 World Cup squad and expected to feature in the final 15, Malinga’s mentorship could prove crucial. His unique bowling style and success at the highest level position him perfectly to guide these young fast bowlers in refining their skills for international competition.

Sri Lanka Cricket, in an official release, stated that the board aims to leverage Malinga’s renowned expertise in death bowling to strengthen the team’s overall bowling performance ahead of the World Cup.

Sri Lanka Set to Co-Host First Men’s Global Event Since 2012

The upcoming T20 World Cup marks Sri Lanka’s first time hosting a men’s global cricket tournament since 2012. The event will begin on February 7 and conclude on March 8, with matches being played across three Sri Lankan venues: R. Premadasa Stadium (Khettarama) and SSC in Colombo, along with Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

Sri Lanka have been placed in Group B alongside Australia, Ireland, Oman, and Zimbabwe. As co-hosts, expectations will be high, and Malinga’s presence in the coaching setup adds experience and confidence as the team looks to make a strong impact on home soil.
