Kuldeep Yadav on His Test Exclusion: “Batting Depth Took Priority, Not Skills”

Kuldeep Yadav has made the most of the limited opportunities he’s received in Test cricket. Since his debut in 2017, the left-arm wrist-spinner from Uttar Pradesh has played just 13 Tests, claiming 56 wickets at an impressive average of 22.16. Despite this performance, Kuldeep has often found himself sidelined—not because of form or fitness, but due to India’s team combinations and a preference for deeper batting line-ups, especially in overseas conditions.

Clear Communication from Team Management

Kuldeep recently addressed his limited Test appearances in a press conference ahead of India’s Asia Cup match against Oman. He spoke candidly about how selection choices were made during key series, particularly in England.

“Sometimes, in 3-4 matches, I felt that I could play, but unfortunately, I couldn’t play because they wanted batting depth. The communication was very clear. I feel that that is a very important thing,” he said.

Kuldeep credited India’s current head coach Gautam Gambhir, often referred to as “Gauti,” for being transparent about the decisions.

“Gauti was very straightforward. It wasn’t about skill or batting—it was about conditions and combinations,” Kuldeep added.

This open communication helped him stay mentally prepared and understand the broader team strategy, even when he wasn’t in the playing XI.

Learning Through Setbacks and Comebacks

Kuldeep’s last appearance for India was in March during the Champions Trophy. Though he was out of the side for a while, his recent performances on return have been stellar. He picked up four wickets against the UAE and followed it with three key scalps against Pakistan, marking a strong comeback.

He emphasized how time away from international cricket allowed him to work on his rhythm, fitness, and bowling volume.

“Challenges are always there, especially when you’re playing your first game after a break. Rhythm is very important. But that break helped me improve my fitness and bowling. I learned a lot.”

Kuldeep also shared his insights on mental growth during periods of non-selection. Watching from the sidelines gave him a new perspective on the game.

“When you don’t play, you learn. You get ideas by observing how the team reacts to different situations. That helped me grow as a player.”

He mentioned that during his return via domestic cricket, particularly the Duleep Trophy, he bowled 35 overs without a wicket, but the match helped him regain rhythm and confidence.

“It’s easy to blame others, but harder to look within. You have to ask—what can I improve? What’s my weakness? That’s the only way to get better.”

Kuldeep’s mindset reflects maturity and resilience—key traits for any athlete trying to make a lasting impact. He believes that cricket, like life, is full of ups and downs.

“Some days you get five wickets, sometimes none. But you must always believe that you can do better. That hunger is important.”
