Former India opener and ex-selector Kris Srikkanth has weighed in on the ongoing discussion around senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. While acknowledging them as automatic picks in India’s ODI setup, Srikkanth emphasized the importance of playing domestic cricket to maintain match fitness ahead of major international assignments.

Kohli and Rohit Yet to Play Since IPL 2025

Since the conclusion of the IPL 2025 in early June, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have not featured in any competitive cricket matches. However, their commitment to preparation remains evident. Rohit Sharma has been training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), while Kohli has been sharpening his skills in the UK.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth said, “The chairman and the board will have a word with them and say, ‘You guys will have to come and start playing domestic cricket because it is good for you and the team.’ They need match practice, and they will come and do it.”

He added that both players have expressed their desire to be part of India’s campaign for the 2027 ODI World Cup and are motivated to contribute to a potential title run. “The fact that they said they’re available and want to play the 2027 World Cup, hoping that they can win it for the team at that time. That’s why they’re playing. So I will surely give them the chance to play.”

Srikkanth Backs Rohit as Captain for Australia Series

Srikkanth also addressed ongoing rumors about the future of both players. He was firm in his belief that the duo remains vital to India’s plans and should be backed fully by the selectors.

“Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are superstars. In my opinion, they will be automatic choices for the Australia tour. If I were the chairman of selectors, I would make Rohit Sharma the captain for the Australia ODI series,” Srikkanth said.

To help them regain rhythm, he recommended that both should participate in domestic competitions, specifically the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s premier 50-over domestic tournament. “You should tell them to play domestic cricket in the ODI format. Tell them to play Vijay Hazare Trophy to get back in rhythm. They themselves know it.”

The former selector was especially supportive of Kohli, saying, “For a person like Kohli, who has done so much for India, I will give extra leverage surely.”

Both Rohit and Kohli are expected to return to action during India’s upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia, scheduled from October 19 to 25. Their form and leadership will be crucial as India builds toward the next World Cup cycle.
