As the 2025-26 Indian domestic cricket season approaches, there has been a whirlwind of spin-bowling transfers and strategic team reshuffles. One of the biggest headlines came from Kerala, where veteran all-rounder and fan favourite Jalaj Saxena announced that he won’t be participating in the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 season.

This decision has left Kerala in a tight spot, as Jalaj was not only a consistent performer with the ball but also crucial to their incredible run to the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 final. Jalaj, a left-arm spinner and a seasoned professional, had been a rock in the Kerala bowling lineup since he moved from Madhya Pradesh (MP). However, notably, he has not yet sought a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA), leaving a window of uncertainty about his future.

Jayant Yadav Joins Puducherry, Ankit Sharma Eyes Kerala

Just as Jalaj’s decision sent ripples through Kerala cricket, another move came to light—India international Jayant Yadav has shifted his base from Haryana to Puducherry. This strategic move is aimed at reviving his all-format domestic cricket career and making a strong case for national selection again.

Jayant’s inclusion in Puducherry, however, led to the exit of Ankit Sharma, their established left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder. And where is Ankit headed? Possibly to Kerala, effectively completing a curious circle of spin-bowling transitions.

Kerala Cricket Association Confirms Talks with Ankit Sharma

KCA sources have confirmed that Ankit Sharma recently came down for an interview. Speaking to Cricbuzz, a source within the association said:

“We have interviewed Ankit. He had come down to Kerala for an interview, but we have yet to make a final decision.”

If Ankit does get the nod, he will be one of two professionals Kerala plans to hire to cover the exits of Jalaj Saxena and Aditya Sarwate, another high-profile spinner who has left the squad.

Ankit is no stranger to a journeyman’s life. Originally from MP, he moved to Puducherry ahead of the 2022-23 season and has had a decent First-Class stint. In 14 games for Puducherry, he has picked up 49 wickets and scored 441 runs, with both his bowling and batting averages in the 20s—highlighting his all-round capabilities.

Recently, Ankit was also named as a replacement for the injured R Sai Kishore in the South Zone squad, indicating that his form and fitness are in good shape going into the season.

Conclusion:
If the Ankit Sharma deal goes through, Kerala might just find a new spin spearhead in him. With Jayant Yadav taking charge in Puducherry and Haryana left with just one experienced spinner, the Indian domestic circuit is witnessing a fascinating reshuffle of spin talent. Whether Jalaj returns to action elsewhere remains to be seen, but Kerala seems determined to keep its spinning fortunes alive.
