In a fresh push to revive his Test cricket career, Indian wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has signed a short-term contract with Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club. The 26-year-old left-hander will temporarily fill in for South African wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne, who is away on national duty for a two-match Test series against Zimbabwe.
This move marks Kishan’s first stint in county cricket, and he joins the growing list of Indian players exploring red-ball opportunities in England. Recently, Ruturaj Gaikwad (Yorkshire) and Tilak Varma (Hampshire) also inked county deals.
Underrated Red-Ball Record Despite White-Ball Fame
While Ishan Kishan is more popularly known for his explosive performances in white-ball cricket, his red-ball credentials are quietly impressive. Across first-class cricket, Kishan has amassed 3447 runs, including eight centuries and 17 half-centuries. These numbers showcase a more measured and technically sound side of his batting that many fans may not be familiar with.
Speaking on his new opportunity, Kishan expressed excitement about testing himself in English conditions.
“I’m feeling very excited to get my first taste of playing county cricket in England, and it will be a great chance to showcase my skills. I want to make sure I am the best cricketer I can be, and playing in English conditions will really help me to learn new skills.”
Debut Match Against Yorkshire Looms Large
Kishan’s first assignment for Nottinghamshire will be a high-profile clash against Yorkshire, where he’s likely to face Pakistan’s top-order star Abdullah Shafique. The match could be a thrilling contest between international talents from South Asia.
Currently, Nottinghamshire sit at the top of the Division One points table, having won four out of their seven games. A strong performance from Kishan could not only strengthen his Test credentials but also boost Notts’ chances in the title race.
He also shared his enthusiasm for playing at the iconic Trent Bridge.
“Trent Bridge is such a famous ground that is well-known in India and around the world, and I am really excited that I will be playing there.”
As Indian cricket fans continue to look for emerging red-ball stars, Ishan Kishan’s county stint could be a turning point in his journey back into the national Test squad.
