The Indian women’s cricket team is all set to begin a five-match T20I series against England at Trent Bridge on Saturday, June 28. While the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup is still a year away, this series provides a golden opportunity for India to test its young players and newly formed bowling unit in English conditions.

Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana believes the series is not only about winning but also about growth—particularly for the batters and young talents aiming to adapt and refine their skills.

A Format That Demands Constant Evolution

Smriti Mandhana, speaking in the pre-match press conference, emphasized how dynamic the T20 format is and how it demands constant improvement from batters.

“In T20s, there’s always room for improvement. You need to keep improvising and evolving because teams plan against you in detail. It’s important to stay a step ahead,” she said.

The fast-paced format pushes players to constantly adapt, and Mandhana sees this series as a key opportunity for that evolution. She noted that for many players, especially the younger ones, this series will be about building experience and understanding what works in foreign conditions.

Early UK Arrival and Targeted Preparation

India arrived in the UK well ahead of the series, participating in practice games and acclimatizing to the conditions. The team also had a 25-day training camp at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore, focused on fine-tuning skills specifically for this tour.

“We had targeted batter and bowler camps at the NCA, which were really helpful. Then we arrived here early for around eight days of preparation, including practice matches,” Mandhana shared.

This early groundwork is especially critical as many players, including Kranti Goud and Sree Charani, will be experiencing their first series in England. Mandhana believes that understanding the local pitches and weather patterns will be invaluable for them.

A Glimpse Into the Future

With several first-time UK tourists in the squad and a reshaped pace-bowling unit—partly due to recent injuries—Mandhana is optimistic about the fresh faces making their mark. She credited the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and the domestic circuit for identifying new talent.

“WPL and our domestic cricket have helped in bringing new talent forward. Although injuries have led to a new-look pace attack, it’s an exciting time for Indian women’s cricket,” she noted.

This series not only acts as a testing ground for newcomers but also as a mini rehearsal for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will also be held in the UK. Playing five matches in similar summer conditions gives India a valuable preview of what to expect on the big stage next year.
