The cricketing world is gearing up for one of its most electrifying rivalries as India and Pakistan face off in the Asia Cup 2025 next month. Scheduled to take place in Dubai, the much-anticipated match is expected to attract massive global viewership, not just for the sport, but also due to the ongoing political tensions between the two nations.

The backdrop of the clash is especially intense this time, following Pakistan’s alleged involvement in the terror attack in Pahalgam a few months ago. Despite the strained relations, former Pakistani pace legend Wasim Akram has called for cricket to rise above politics.

Wasim Akram Urges Focus on Cricket, Not Politics

Speaking on the Stick With Cricket Podcast, Wasim Akram stressed the importance of allowing the game to continue irrespective of off-field tensions.

“Asia Cup schedule is out, there is backlash. But we in Pakistan are calm. We will be fine whether we play or don’t play. The game must go on,” said Akram.

Known for his unmatched records — Pakistan’s highest wicket-taker in both Tests and ODIs — Akram emphasized the need to separate cricket from political discourse. He expressed his personal desire to witness a Test series between India and Pakistan, a format the two countries haven’t played against each other since December 2007.

“I hope to see a Test series between India and Pakistan in my lifetime,” he added. “Politics apart, I am not a politician. They are patriotic about their country, we are patriotic about ours. Let’s not go below the belt. Talk about the triumphs of your country; the same goes for Pakistan and the same goes for India. It is easier said than done.”

India’s Asia Cup 2025 Campaign Kicks Off on September 10

In the Asia Cup 2025 group stage, India has been drawn alongside Pakistan, UAE, and Oman. The Men in Blue will open their campaign against UAE on September 10, followed by the blockbuster clash against Pakistan on September 14, both matches set to be held in Dubai.

The high-stakes encounter is expected to dominate headlines and stir fan emotions across the globe. While the political situation remains tense, the cricketing community hopes the focus stays on the field — where rivalries are fierce, but the spirit of the game remains intact.
