It was a disappointing end to the much-anticipated five-match T20I series between India and Australia, as heavy rain and lightning brought the final game at The Gabba to a premature close. India were off to a flying start at 52/0 in just 4.5 overs when the players were forced off the field due to lightning. Persistent bad weather meant there was no resumption, resulting in the match being declared a no-result.
The washed-out encounter confirmed India’s 2-1 series win, sealing a memorable triumph against the defending T20 world champions.
Australia’s First Bilateral T20I Series Defeat in Two Years
The no-result marked the end of an impressive streak for Australia, who hadn’t lost a bilateral T20I series in two full years. It also brought Mitchell Marsh’s unbeaten captaincy record to an end — the all-rounder had previously gone eight consecutive T20I series without defeat since taking over the role.
Interestingly, Australia’s last bilateral T20I series defeat before this also came against India, in November 2023, right after the ODI World Cup. You’d have to go even further back — to October 2022 against England at home — to find the last time Australia lost a T20I series to a team other than India.
India Extend Their Unbeaten T20I Series Streak to Ten
For India, the result extends a remarkable run of consistency in the shortest format. The Men in Blue are now unbeaten in 10 consecutive bilateral T20I series, winning nine of them and drawing one (against South Africa in late 2023).
The West Indies remain the last team to beat India in a T20I bilateral series, having won 3-2 at home in August 2023. Since November 2021, that series loss in the Caribbean remains India’s only blemish in the format.
With the T20I series wrapped up, both teams will now switch their focus to red-ball cricket. India are set to host South Africa in a two-Test series starting November 14, while Australia turn their attention to The Ashes, beginning November 21.
