As India prepares to kick off their Asia Cup 2025 campaign, former Indian vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane has shared his thoughts on what could give the Men in Blue the edge in the tournament. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Rahane highlighted the pivotal role of all-rounder Hardik Pandya, especially with the ball.
India will open their Asia Cup journey against UAE on September 10 (Wednesday), followed by a high-octane clash with Pakistan on September 14 in Dubai, where spin-friendly conditions are expected to dominate.
Hardik Pandya’s Four Overs Could Define India’s Balance
Rahane emphasized that Hardik Pandya’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball is essential for India to maintain balance in their playing XI. While Pandya’s explosive batting in the middle order is well known, Rahane believes his four overs of pace bowling can make a significant difference in team composition.
“Hardik’s role in this Asia Cup will be really important. As an all-rounder, he has done really well for the team in the past. Coming at No. 5 and 6 as a batter, creating that impact, playing with a high strike rate, reading the situation, and playing according to it—he has done it all. I’m sure he can do it again,” said Rahane.
He added, “What I would like to see from Hardik is bowling his four overs for the team. If he can do that, bowl those four overs, the team can actually have a very good balance.”
Axar Patel: India’s Underrated All-Round Asset
Rahane also praised Axar Patel, calling him an underrated yet crucial contributor to India’s recent success. Over the past couple of years, Axar has evolved as a dependable all-rounder, often stepping up in pressure situations—both with the bat and the ball.
“I feel he is a very much underrated player. He has improved as a cricketer in the last two to three years. Whenever he’s got an opportunity as a batter, as a bowler, he has performed really well for the team,” Rahane said.
Highlighting his bowling versatility, Rahane noted that Axar can bowl effectively in the powerplay, middle overs, and even at the death if required. His fielding skills are another asset that adds depth to India’s squad.
With the Asia Cup being played in Dubai, where conditions often favor spin, Axar’s experience and control could be a game-changer.
“As a captain, when you have a player like Axar Patel in the team, you are always happy. Let’s not forget about his fielding ability as well. And also, Asia Cup is in Dubai. Most probably, the wickets will favor the spinners. So, Axar’s skill work and also experience will come in handy for the team.”
