England ended Day 2 of the second Test against India at Edgbaston in a difficult position, trailing significantly in the first innings. At stumps, they were 77 for 3, with Harry Brook (30*) and Joe Root (18*) holding the fort. Despite the mountain of runs ahead, England’s assistant coach Jeetan Patel expressed confidence in the team’s ability to fight back.

Patel Backs Root and Brook to Lead England’s Response

Speaking after play on July 3, Patel pointed to the quality of the batters currently at the crease, especially Joe Root and Harry Brook, as a reason for optimism. “We have two of the greatest batters in the world at the crease now. Hopefully they get back in tomorrow, settle down, and cash in on what could be a good day’s cricket,” he said.

The former New Zealand international emphasized that the team’s belief and adaptability remain their biggest strengths. “We will find another way of trying to get over the line. That’s the beauty of the team we have, the players we have, and the belief they have.”

“Still a Lot of Cricket Left”: Patel Urges Fans Not to Write England Off

Despite India’s strong position, Patel reminded everyone that the Test match is far from over. With three full days remaining and Edgbaston known for quick scoring, he believes anything is possible.

“There are three days of cricket left, lots of cricket to go, and on a fast-scoring ground you never know what can happen,” he said. “I’ve said this many times in front of all of you, and you keep laughing at me! It’s about getting some rest, some shut-eye, and coming back fresh tomorrow.”

With Brendon McCullum as head coach and Tim Southee assisting with bowling duties, England’s New Zealand-influenced coaching staff is banking on resilience and tactical nous to turn the game around. Fans will be watching closely to see if Root and Brook can deliver on Day 3 and keep England in the contest.
