McCullum Calls for Measured Response After Two-Day Loss

England coach Brendon McCullum has urged his players and supporters to avoid overreacting following the team’s crushing two-day defeat to Australia in Perth. England, who looked to be in a strong position at one stage, collapsed dramatically and handed Australia an eight-wicket victory in the Ashes opener.

McCullum admitted the loss brought “loads of pain and chatter,” acknowledging that such a rapid defeat affects not only the squad but also the fans who follow the team so passionately. However, he stressed that the key now is calm, steady recovery rather than sweeping changes or panic-driven decisions.

He reiterated that England’s core philosophy remains unchanged — applying pressure on the opposition and maintaining intent. According to McCullum, adapting to situations is important, but the foundation of their approach remains consistent. He noted that England still believed 200 was a competitive score before Travis Head’s game-changing innings shifted the momentum firmly toward Australia.

Focus Turns to Regrouping Ahead of Brisbane Pink-Ball Test

Looking ahead, McCullum said the team would take time to let the defeat sink in before reassessing their plans for the next stage of the series. He emphasized that how England respond to this setback will play a major role in shaping the remainder of the Ashes.

The England coach added that the management team would map out a plan for the coming two weeks, including decisions on which players may need additional time in the middle. Despite the disappointment, McCullum insisted that the squad remains strong in its belief and committed to its overall approach.

England now move on to Brisbane for the second Test, a day-night pink-ball clash beginning December 4 — a fresh challenge that offers the team an opportunity to reset and fight back in the series.
