As India prepares for the first Test against South Africa, starting November 14 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, all eyes are on young wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel, who has been in the form of his life. The 23-year-old recently smashed back-to-back centuries in an unofficial Test against South Africa A in Bengaluru, drawing praise from none other than former India captain Sourav Ganguly.

Ganguly believes Jurel’s remarkable run with the bat makes a strong case for his inclusion in India’s playing XI for the upcoming Test. “He’s playing well, isn’t he?” Ganguly told The Indian Express.

Sourav Ganguly Backs Dhruv Jurel for India’s Playing XI

According to Ganguly, India’s Test squad already looks well-set, but Jurel’s performances demand attention. “Rishabh is back, and I don’t know what the selectors are thinking. Basically, the spots are taken — two openers, (Shubman) Gill at 4, Pant at 5, KL (Rahul), (Ravindra) Jadeja are there. Players have performed,” the former skipper explained.

However, Ganguly also pointed out a possible opportunity for Jurel. “How easy will it be to open up a slot for Dhruv Jurel at this stage, I wouldn’t know… But it depends on whom they want to send at No. 3 — whether they want to go with Sai Sudharsan, or bring in our in-form Dhruv in. We’ll find out,” he added.

Jurel’s Consistent Run with the Bat

Jurel’s recent performances have been nothing short of outstanding. After a quiet outing during India’s tour of England in August, the young batter returned home with renewed confidence. Since then, he has scored four centuries in five First-Class matches, including one against the visiting West Indies side.

Meanwhile, Sai Sudharsan, who currently bats at number three for India, has been struggling to convert starts into big scores and has not managed a century in his last eight innings. This contrast in form has fueled the discussion about whether Jurel deserves a place in the starting lineup for the South Africa Test.

With his current form and growing confidence, Dhruv Jurel has made a strong case for himself. Whether the selectors choose to capitalize on his momentum remains to be seen — but one thing is certain, India’s batting order selection at Eden Gardens will be closely watched.
