David Warner Hints at Batting Down the Order to Add Flexibility to Sydney Thunder Line-up in BBL

David Warner has suggested he could bat down the order at times during the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season as Sydney Thunder look to add variety and balance to their batting line-up. Despite opening in 382 of his 423 T20 innings across all levels, Warner indicated that team strategy may dictate a different role this season.

Speaking about the possibility of opening alongside young batter Sam Konstas, Warner made it clear nothing is locked in. The Thunder captain explained that the move would be driven by match-ups and the need for a left-handed presence in the middle order, something the team believes has been missing.

Warner Open to Tactical Shift in Thunder Batting Order

Warner said the Thunder are actively discussing how best to structure their top and middle order, with flexibility being key. While he has traditionally been an opener, Warner noted that batting lower could provide the team with a different option, particularly against certain bowling attacks.

He also pointed out that Matt Gilkes could fill a similar role, while Nic Maddinson and Blake Nikitaras offer additional left-handed depth in the squad. Last season, the Thunder relied on West Indian import Sherfane Rutherford for that balance, but his impact was limited, managing just 74 runs in six innings.

The focus, according to Warner, is on adaptability and making sure the line-up can respond to different game situations throughout the tournament.

Warner Urges Sam Konstas to Be Brave and Back Himself

Warner also had strong words of support for Sam Konstas, encouraging the young opener to stay confident as he pushes for another opportunity at international level. Konstas’ hopes of an Ashes call-up were dented by a run of low scores early in the domestic season, but recent performances — including a Sheffield Shield century and a half-century — have put him back on the radar.

Warner stressed that runs are the ultimate currency in cricket and warned about the pressures young players face when thrust into the spotlight. He believes Konstas has the right support system around him to stay grounded and continue developing.

According to Warner, the best learning comes from time in the middle, urging Konstas to trust his shot selection and play with freedom. He also emphasized the team’s responsibility to protect the young batter, allow him to enjoy the game, and stick to the natural style that earned him opportunities in the first place.

Looking ahead to the new season, Warner said Sydney Thunder are determined to improve after falling short in last year’s final against Hobart Hurricanes. While admitting the team was scrappy at times and didn’t always play complete games, he praised the group’s passion and resilience.

With their season opener set for next Tuesday in Hobart, Warner dismissed any talk of revenge. Instead, he wants the Thunder to focus on making a strong statement from the outset and continually asking how they can improve as the tournament unfolds.
