One Day International cricket may not dominate the modern schedule the way it once did, but India’s ODI fixtures have regained spotlight thanks to the continued presence of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. With both senior stars having retired from Tests and T20Is, ODIs remain the only format in which fans can still watch the legendary pair together.
Despite the excitement, a major question looms: Will Rohit and Kohli continue playing until the 2027 ODI World Cup? By the time the tournament arrives—about 18 months from now—Rohit will be close to 40 and Kohli nearly 39. While both remain in excellent physical condition and high on motivation, their longevity in the format continues to be a topic of discussion.
Morkel Confident the Duo Can Make It to 2027
Ahead of India’s ODI series in South Africa, Team India bowling coach Morne Morkel addressed the speculation. Speaking to the media, as reported by Times of India, Morkel said that although the 2027 World Cup is “still a long way away,” he believes the two experienced batters have everything it takes to stay in the mix.
“They’re quality players. As long as they’re happy to put the hard work in and maintain their fitness, sure,” Morkel said. He emphasized that experience is a priceless asset in major tournaments, adding, “I’ve always believed in experience and to have that experience, you don’t find that anywhere. They’ve won trophies, they know how to play big tournaments.”
Morkel Praises Their Experience and Impact
The former South African fast bowler, who has bowled extensively to both Indian superstars, admitted that facing Rohit and Kohli often made him lose sleep during his playing days. “I know as a bowler what goes into preparing to play against them. So for me, I’m definitely on board with them playing the 2027 World Cup,” he added.
When it comes to form, the duo has shown no signs of slowing down. In their most recent ODI partnership in Sydney, they put together an unbeaten 168-run stand—Rohit scoring a brilliant century while Kohli finished on 74*. That knock propelled Rohit to the No. 1 ODI batting ranking for the first time in his career, reinforcing the idea that both players remain at the top of their game.
As India looks ahead to the next World Cup cycle, the combination of fitness, form, and vast experience may well keep Kohli and Rohit firmly in the ODI picture—much to the delight of fans around the world.
