Cummins Confirms Faith in Green’s Test Potential

Cameron Green may have started his stint at No.3 in the batting order with scores of just 4 and 0, but the Australian team management is firmly backing the young all-rounder for the long haul. With 1,381 Test runs at an average of 34.52—including eight 50+ scores—Green has already shown promise early in his career.

Australia skipper Pat Cummins, speaking ahead of the first Test against the West Indies in Barbados, confirmed that the team sees Green as a long-term solution at first drop.

“We see that [Green at No. 3] as a long-term option,” Cummins said. “He had a Test match where it obviously didn’t go to plan. Think he only faced three or four balls, so the message is not to look into that too much. We’re really happy with where his game’s placed and I dare say we’ll get a decent run of No. 3.”

Labuschagne Left Out, But Door Still Open

Green’s promotion means Marnus Labuschagne misses out, a notable omission given his recent role in the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa. Labuschagne even opened the innings during that match, underlining his versatility and importance. However, Cummins made it clear that the door isn’t closed on the right-hander.

“I think him at his best is well and truly an international standard Test batter,” Cummins stated. “If there’s an opening, we could see him fighting his way back into the Test team. He’s had a good run but didn’t make the most of it as he would have liked, so we’re offering the opportunity to the next couple of guys.”

This strategic shuffle is part of Australia’s effort to build depth and consistency at the start of the new WTC cycle, with the three-match series against the West Indies marking the beginning of that journey.

Smith Set to Miss First Test, Possible Return for Second

Another significant development for Australia is the absence of Steve Smith, who will miss the first Test after dislocating his finger during the WTC final. Smith’s availability for the second Test remains uncertain, pending medical clearance.

“He’s got a few return-to-play protocols he’s got to tick off,” Cummins noted. “The medical team has a program for him, and we’re hopeful he’ll be available for the second Test.”

Australia will kick off their WTC campaign against the West Indies on June 25 in Barbados, aiming to find the right mix of experience and youth as they eye a strong start to the new cycle.
