New Zealand has bolstered their bowling stocks for the upcoming T20 World Cup by adding fast bowler Ben Sears to the squad as a traveling reserve. The move comes as the Black Caps finalize their preparations in India, ensuring they have pace cover ready to go for the tournament’s opening fixtures.

Ben Sears Replaces Gap Left by Injury Shuffles

The 25-year-old’s inclusion is the final piece of a roster puzzle triggered by recent injuries. After Adam Milne was unfortunately ruled out of the tournament, Kyle Jamieson was promoted to the primary squad, leaving a reserve spot open. Sears, who has been sidelined with a hamstring issue, proved his fitness and form during a standout Super Smash campaign with the Wellington Firebirds.

During the domestic season, Sears was a force to be reckoned with, claiming 15 wickets at an average of 17.93. His performance saw him finish as the joint second-top wicket-taker in the round-robin stage, a feat that caught the eye of the national selectors.

From Super Smash Success to the World Stage

New Zealand coach Rob Walter praised the young quick’s resilience in returning from injury. Walter noted that having Sears with the group in India provides vital security, stating that the pacer is “ready to make an impact” should any further injuries strike the main squad. Sears brings a decent level of international experience to the reserve role, having already earned 22 T20I caps for New Zealand.

The Black Caps are currently in the middle of a high-stakes series against India, trailing 3-1 heading into the final match this Sunday. Following that, Sears will link up with his teammates in Mumbai ahead of their warm-up clash against the USA on February 5.

New Zealand officially kicks off its World Cup campaign against Afghanistan in Chennai on February 8, followed by group-stage encounters with the UAE, South Africa, and Canada. With Sears now in the mix, the squad looks well-equipped to handle the rigors of a tight tournament schedule.
