BCCI Swaps Test Venues to Protect Players from Delhi’s Toxic Air in November

In a significant move prioritizing player health, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to revise the venues for two upcoming Test matches. Originally set to host a high-profile Test against South Africa in mid-November 2025, Delhi will now stage a different match in October instead. The decision comes amid growing concerns about the capital’s worsening air quality during the winter months.

Kolkata to Host India vs South Africa Test in November

Kolkata’s iconic Eden Gardens will now host the first Test between India and South Africa from November 14 to 18, a fixture that was initially scheduled to take place at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.

This change was prompted by the historically high pollution levels in Delhi around that time of year, often caused by post-Diwali firecrackers and stubble burning in nearby states. These environmental factors lead to smog and severely degraded air quality, making it hazardous for athletes to engage in prolonged physical activity.

Delhi to Host West Indies Test in October

In the revised schedule, Delhi will now host the second Test between India and the West Indies from October 10 to 14, a time when pollution levels are generally lower and more manageable. This match was previously planned for Eden Gardens but has now been shifted as part of the venue swap.

A BCCI official confirmed the change, saying, “This has been done to avoid the players from being affected by possibly high pollution levels at that time of the year. The BCCI prioritizes the welfare and well-being of the players and their health at all times.” The board is expected to make a formal announcement soon.

History of Pollution Concerns in Delhi Cricket

This isn’t the first time the national capital’s air quality has impacted international cricket. During the 2017 Delhi Test against Sri Lanka, players were visibly affected, with several wearing face masks and some even vomiting on the field. A similar incident occurred in 2019, when two Bangladeshi players fell ill during an ODI in Delhi.

Even as recently as the 2023 ODI World Cup, concerns resurfaced when Bangladesh was forced to cancel a training session ahead of their match against Sri Lanka due to poor air conditions.

Expert Warnings and Public Criticism

Health experts have long advised against intense sports activity in Delhi during the winter, warning of long-term respiratory damage and cardiovascular stress due to fine particulate matter in the air. The BCCI initially defended the original schedule by citing its venue rotation policy. However, after strong backlash from players, fans, and the medical community, the board reconsidered.

With this proactive decision, the BCCI is sending a clear message: player health comes first.
