One of Sri Lanka’s modern cricketing greats, Angelo Mathews, brought down the curtain on a remarkable Test career on June 21 in Galle, during the first Test against Bangladesh. The 38-year-old all-rounder had already announced that this match would mark his final appearance in the whites, and he bowed out after scoring 39 and 8, helping Sri Lanka draw the match with a resilient 45-ball stay in the second innings.
A Stellar Career Comes to an End
Mathews finishes his Test career with 8,214 runs at an average of 44.40, including 16 centuries, making him one of the most accomplished batters in Sri Lankan cricket history. Known for his calm demeanor and ability to rescue innings under pressure, Mathews has been a key figure in the national setup for over a decade and a half.
“It’s time for the younger players to take the baton and drive Sri Lanka forward,” he said in an emotional interview following the Test. “Retiring from the best format, the one I loved the most, isn’t easy. But we certainly have the young talent to carry us into the future.”
The veteran all-rounder also reflected on the overwhelming love and support he received after announcing his retirement. “I can’t believe the love that’s come my way. I am truly grateful for everyone who supported me through the ups and downs,” he added.
Career Highlights: England 2014 & Australia 2016
When asked about his career highlights, Mathews singled out two memorable achievements: the historic series win in England in 2014, and the stunning 3-0 whitewash of Australia at home in 2016.
“The win against England in England and whitewashing the Australians in Sri Lanka — those were huge honors achieved by the entire team,” he recalled.
Mathews also took a moment to thank his teammates, coaches, and fans: “I am thankful to all the players who stood by me, the coaching staff, and most importantly, the fans. Your love means everything to me.”
As Angelo Mathews steps away from Test cricket, he leaves behind a legacy built on resilience, class, and leadership — a name etched in Sri Lankan cricket history.
