Angelo Mathews Bids Farewell to Test Cricket with Anti-Climactic Dismissal

Angelo Mathews, one of Sri Lanka’s finest Test cricketers, ended his illustrious red-ball career on a somewhat tame note. In what turned out to be his final innings in Test cricket, Mathews fell for 39, missing out on a well-deserved half-century. His dismissal came at the hands of Bangladesh’s part-time spinner Mominul Haque — a surprising twist given the bowler’s recent track record.

Mathews Falls to Mominul After Promising Start

Mathews looked well on course for a milestone, batting with composure and control. With a potential fifty or even a century within reach, his sudden edge to Mominul Haque shocked many. Prior to this match, Mominul hadn’t taken a Test wicket since November 2023, when he dismissed a New Zealand batter in Sylhet. He had gone nine innings without a scalp before breaking the drought by removing the Sri Lankan legend.

This wicket marked only the 11th Test dismissal of Mominul’s career, but his list of victims is noteworthy. In addition to Mathews, he has dismissed international stars like Faf du Plessis, Temba Bavuma, and Quinton de Kock — proving his knack for picking up big wickets despite limited bowling spells.

A Memorable Test Career Ends on a High Note

Even though Mathews couldn’t convert his start into a bigger score, his legacy in Test cricket remains untouched. With over 7,000 Test runs to his name, Mathews will retire with a batting average above 44.00 — an elite figure among Sri Lankan batters. Only two other legends, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, boast better averages among Sri Lankans who’ve crossed the 6,000-run mark.

As a mark of respect, the Bangladesh players gave Mathews a guard of honour when he walked in to bat — a fitting tribute to a career that has brought immense value to Sri Lankan cricket over the past 15 years. Whether or not he bats again in the match, Mathews’ place among the greats of the game is firmly cemented.
