West Indies all-rounder Andre Russell has officially announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing an end to a memorable 15-year journey. Russell will play his final game for the West Indies on July 22, 2025, during the second T20I against Australia at Sabina Park, Kingston — the very ground where his cricketing dreams began.
At 37, Russell leaves behind a legacy that includes 141 appearances across formats, two T20 World Cup titles, and some of the most explosive performances ever witnessed in international cricket.
A Career Highlight: 2016 World T20 Semi-Final vs India
Looking back at his international career, Russell highlighted one match that stood out above the rest — the 2016 ICC World T20 semi-final against India at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Chasing a stiff target of 193, Russell played a vital role in taking West Indies to victory, alongside Lendl Simmons.
“Definitely [my best moment was] the 2016 World Cup, that semi-final game against India where I brought the team home… Chasing 190-plus in that semi-final in India, with the crowd supporting India only, that was already a bit of pressure,” Russell said in a heartfelt interview with Cricket West Indies.
He fondly recalled smashing Virat Kohli for a six, a moment that has since become etched in the memory of West Indies fans. “The wicket was a very good one, and the confidence in the dressing room gave me the freedom to go out and play my natural game,” he added.
Two-Time T20 World Cup Champion Reflects on Glory
Russell remains one of the few players to have lifted the T20 World Cup twice, a feat that he says still feels surreal. Speaking about waking up the morning after the final, he said, “You realise you’ve only been sleeping for two hours, but you feel well-rested because you want to see all of those memories and good comments online.”
Despite his success, Russell believes now is the right time to step away from the international scene. “I did my best in every chance I got representing the West Indies. I think it’s the perfect ground and the perfect series — against a good team as well, Australia — to end my international career.”
The power-hitter, who continues to dominate franchise leagues around the globe, expressed deep gratitude for the support of fans and acknowledged how emotional the farewell will be in front of his home crowd.
As West Indies prepare to face Australia, all eyes will be on Sabina Park for Russell’s final outing in maroon — a fitting stage for one of T20 cricket’s most iconic players.
