Veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane has expressed a strong desire to return to India’s Test team, even as he remains out of the national red-ball setup since July 2023. Currently present at Lord’s during the third Test between India and England, Rahane spoke to Sky Sports Cricket and shared his ongoing passion for Test cricket.
Rahane’s Commitment to Test Cricket Remains Unshaken
“It’s good to be here. I still want to play Test cricket,” Rahane told Sky Sports. “I am really passionate about playing Test cricket, and at this moment, I’m enjoying my game.”
Despite being out of the Test squad, the 36-year-old has remained active in domestic cricket. Since his last Test appearance, Rahane has played 21 first-class matches, scoring 989 runs at an average of just under 30. Though these numbers may not be eye-catching, his dedication to the longer format of the game hasn’t faded.
He added, “I’m just here for a few days and carried my training gear to stay fit. Our domestic season is about to begin, so the preparations have started.”
A Glance at Rahane’s Test Career
Ajinkya Rahane has been a vital part of India’s Test team over the past decade. In his career spanning 85 Tests, he has scored 5077 runs at an average of 38.46. His red-ball record includes 12 centuries and 26 half-centuries, with memorable performances overseas, including a famous century at Lord’s in 2014 and a match-winning ton in Melbourne during the 2020–21 Australia tour.
As India continues to explore younger options in the Test arena, Rahane’s experience could still be valuable, particularly in challenging overseas conditions. Whether or not the selectors give him another opportunity remains to be seen, but one thing is clear—Rahane isn’t ready to give up just yet.
