Weeks after being retained by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL), captain Ajinkya Rahane got off to a blazing start in the 2025 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT). Opening for Mumbai against Railways, Rahane scored 62 off just 33 balls, showcasing his aggressive form at the top of the order. However, the innings ended in a freakish dismissal as he was out hit-wicket off Karn Sharma’s bowling.
Rahane opened alongside CSK youngster Ayush Mhatre, who contributed 18 runs off 15 balls. The duo put on a 62-run partnership, with Rahane hitting four boundaries and five sixes. He then stitched another 50-run stand with Suryakumar Yadav, helping Mumbai build a strong foundation for their innings.
Suryakumar Yadav and Shardul Thakur Impress for Mumbai
While Suryakumar Yadav fell short of a half-century, he had a productive outing with 47 runs off 30 balls, striking five fours and two sixes. The right-hander has struggled for form in T20 Internationals this year but is using the SMAT as preparation for the upcoming South Africa T20Is.
Mumbai skipper Shardul Thakur made an impact with the ball, recording figures of 4-1-15-1 and helping keep the Railways in check. Despite Shardul’s performance, Railways’ Ashutosh Sharma shone with a quick 61 off 30 balls before being dismissed by Tushar Deshpande.
Mumbai will now face Vidarbha in Lucknow on November 28 (Friday) in their next SMAT match, looking to continue their winning momentum.
