Ajinkya Rahane’s Brilliant Comeback After a Modest Start

Veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane showcased his class and resilience with a superb century in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy 2025-26 clash against Chhattisgarh at the Wankhede Stadium. The experienced campaigner had a quiet start to the season, managing scores of 27 and 0 in the opening match against Jammu & Kashmir in Srinagar. However, he bounced back strongly in the second fixture, playing a captain’s knock that reminded everyone of his enduring quality.

Walking in at No. 3 after Mumbai lost Musheer Khan early, Rahane had to stabilize the innings as the hosts were reduced to 38/3. Teaming up with Siddesh Lad, who played a crucial innings of 80, Rahane stitched together a vital 165-run partnership for the fourth wicket that rescued Mumbai from a precarious situation.

A Fighting 159 That Proves Rahane Still Has the Fire

Rahane’s innings was a perfect blend of patience and precision. He scored 159 off 303 balls, hitting 21 boundaries, and displayed trademark calmness under pressure. Interestingly, he had to retire hurt on 118 but returned later at the fall of the sixth wicket to carry on his fine work before eventually being dismissed.

This knock marked Rahane’s 42nd first-class century, adding to his impressive record that already includes 59 fifties. His effort not only steadied Mumbai’s innings but also sent a strong message about his form and fitness.

Meanwhile, Sarfaraz Khan, who scored 42 and 32 in the previous game, fell cheaply for just 1 this time and will be keen to make amends in the second innings.

At the time of reporting, Mumbai stood at 388/7, with Akash Anand and skipper Shardul Thakur at the crease, looking to push the total past the 400-run mark.

Though Rahane, aged 37, last played for India in 2023, he continues to nurture hopes of a national comeback. With young talents like Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal emerging in the Test setup, Rahane’s latest innings is a reminder that experience and class still have a place in Indian cricket.
