Shubman Gill’s much-anticipated return to domestic cricket was delayed after the India batter missed Punjab’s Vijay Hazare Trophy clash against Sikkim because of food poisoning. Gill, who arrived in Jaipur on Friday afternoon, was initially expected to play the fifth round fixture but was advised complete rest following a late-night illness.
The decision to sit him out was taken jointly by the medical team and Punjab management, keeping a close eye on his workload and upcoming international commitments. With India’s ODI series against New Zealand scheduled to begin on January 11 in Vadodara, where Gill is expected to captain the side, the management chose a cautious approach.
Gill Likely to Return Against Goa Before ODI Series
According to team sources, Gill is recovering well and is likely to feature in Punjab’s sixth-round Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Goa on January 6. The Indian selectors are also expected to announce the ODI squad over the weekend, after which Gill will link up with the national team.
“Gill didn’t feel well at night and was advised rest by the doctors,” a team official confirmed, adding that there are no long-term concerns regarding his health.
Despite Gill’s absence, Punjab faced no difficulty in their match against Sikkim. Chasing a small target of 76, Punjab wrapped up the game in just 6.2 overs. Prabhsimran Singh starred with an unbeaten 53, while Arshdeep Singh set up the win earlier with a brilliant spell of 5 for 34, marking his third five-wicket haul in List-A cricket.
Injury Concerns Continue for Shubman Gill
Gill’s recent health setback adds to a challenging period marked by injuries and illnesses. During the first Test against South Africa, he suffered a neck injury just three balls into his innings and was ruled out of the remainder of the series. In his absence, Rishabh Pant took over leadership duties in Guwahati.
He later sustained a toe injury during the T20I series against South Africa, which eventually led to his exclusion from India’s squad for the T20 World Cup. While these interruptions have affected his rhythm, Gill’s expected return in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and leadership role in the upcoming ODI series signal a fresh start for the talented batter.
