The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified that it did not pressure Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli to play in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26. An official told RevSportz that the decision to participate was entirely the players’ own, dismissing months of speculation suggesting selectors or the board had urged the senior pair to join the tournament.

Both superstars have already conveyed their willingness to feature in a few matches—Rohit for Mumbai and Kohli for Delhi—bringing massive attention and excitement to India’s premier domestic 50-over competition, which begins on December 24 and concludes on January 18.

Their recent form in international cricket has further amplified the significance of their participation. Since returning to the ODI setup during the Australia series, Rohit has been in sensational touch, notching up scores of 8, 73 and an unbeaten 121, earning the Player of the Series award. He maintained this momentum against South Africa with knocks of 57, 14 and 75.

Kohli also found top gear after a slow start in Australia, where he recovered from back-to-back ducks to score an unbeaten 74. He then dominated South Africa with innings of 135 (120), 102 (93) and an unbeaten 65 (45), securing the Player of the Series honor.

These performances underline that both players remain at peak levels and are determined to extend their ODI careers with an eye on the 2027 World Cup. By then, Kohli will be 39 and Rohit 40, yet their current form reflects how critical they could be to India’s campaign.

India’s next ODI assignment is a three-match series against New Zealand from January 11 to 18, giving both senior batters enough time to feature in multiple Vijay Hazare Trophy matches. Their involvement is expected to elevate the tournament’s visibility and inspire domestic talent across the country.

Why Rohit and Kohli’s Participation Matters

The presence of India’s biggest cricket icons not only boosts the competitiveness of the Vijay Hazare Trophy but also enhances its overall appeal. Young players get the invaluable opportunity to share the field with modern-day greats, while fans gain additional reasons to follow domestic cricket closely.

Looking Ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup

With both stalwarts showcasing exceptional form, their intent to continue in ODIs strengthens India’s plans for the next World Cup cycle. Their experience, leadership and match-winning ability could prove vital as India aims to lift the trophy in 2027.
